The Programming Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of St. Gallen is seeking a candidate for a position as PhD student, per September 1st, 2020 or by mutual agreement.
PhD Student in Programming Languages and Software Engineering
The position provides an excellent opportunity to conduct research on topics at the intersection of software engineering, programming language design and implementation, and distributed systems such as:
- Design of new programming languages, runtimes, and type systems
- Code analysis and empirical studies on software development
- Consistency and fault tolerance in distributed systems
- Software engineering for artificial intelligence
- Languages and middleware for distributed event processing and realtime analytics
- Language-based software security
The projects entail work on theory and on implementation with the weight of each aspect adjusted according to the candidate's profile and research interests. Prerequisites:
- University degree in computer science or mathematics, or a comparable subject
- The ideal candidate has a Programming Language, Software Engineering or Distributed Systems background. Depending on the specific target project, candidates with a Security background are also welcome
- Good communication skills in spoken and written English
- Strong skills in high-level object-oriented programming languages and ability to work independently in programming non-trivial systems
